The End of Infinity

The above is an engraving from Robert Fludd’s Utriusque Cosmi (1617), representing the void in which God created the universe. He got it half right. I’ve always been fascinated by the thought that the universe is both infinite and expanding. And if the universe is all of space, what’s it expanding into? Anyway, I’m playing with a press device idea based on Fludd’s inifinity.

Printed the text pages for Byzantium’s next book, about the art of stencilling, last month. There weren’t many text pages, most of the book will actually be stencilled (including the entire title page). Look for it some time next year.

Am starting to print the next HM book this month. The artist has already printed the two etchings that will go in each copy; she’s working on one to be inlaid to the front board. Details will be sent out to the HM list in early ’27, when it’s about ready for issue.

For those who’ve reserved a copy of the Sci-Fi Violence redux chapbook, progress was impeded on the frontis etching but I expect to have them in hand before the end of October, so copies should be arriving by the end of November.

Apparently blogs have been very two thousand-and-then for some time now. The HM blog actually started about 25 years ago as a quarterly email newsletter, something that gave me an opportunity to exercise my vestigial journalism muscles. Back then Arion was still one man’s vision of what fine printing could be, the contraction of the fine-paper industry was just picking up speed, there were booksellers who actively specialized on contemporary (i.e. new) press books, cell phones were starting to morph into cameras, and some people thought George W. Bush was the worst president America would ever suffer. It’s been fun & interesting, but I think now’s a good time to draw a line under it. I have the Upcoming page on the HM site to share news from the studio. Thanks to all who’ve taken the time to comment on or respond to something they’ve read here. Have fun & be well!
